Branch Highlights
The Northview Branch opened its doors to the public in May 1987. Northview offers a variety of programmes for all ages. Over the past few years, the Branch has partnered with the Oshawa Senior Citizens Centre for many joint programs and events. Northview was the first branch to offer graphic novels and this collection continues to grow in size and breadth. The Branch also showcases many fine films, including foreign films and documentaries. Branch Snapshot
Northview Branch's Marian Neill and her Saint John's Ambulance Therapy Dog Vicki give a Read-to-Me program of four 15 minute sessions for registered children every Wednesday afternoon. Each child receives a library book bag with a stuffed dog and a dog notebook and pen so that when they return to read to Vicky again, they can tell her what books they've read during the week. Marian and Vicky also spend a second hour later in the evening sitting in the open in the children's area and are available to anyone who wishes to read a story to Vicky. After just two reading classes, the mothers of four children who read to Vicky told Marian what a difference they had seen. Vicky lies near the children, occasionally nudging the pages in the book, resting her head on their laps, or sniffing their faces. The children grin, and Marian is constantly amazed by how intuitive Vicky can be. |
